Tatu, age 30, runs a food sales business at a local slaughter house, which she started in 1989. She sells different types of food from 4pm until 8am the next day. Each night, she serves around 80 customers, earning a profit of about US$9. With this profit, she pays for additional food stock and for general household expenses. She also employs two women to help her cook and serve the food, and pays about US$27 a month in rent for the stall. Tatu is a single mother of 4 children (15, 13, 10, and 8 years old) and is also looking after her mother.

Tatu is the leader of Subgroup G in group Tujikwamue Ukonga (Tujikwamue meaning “progressing from one stage to another” in Swahili, and Ukonga being the location), which totals 55 members. Tatu will be sharing this loan with her subgroup members: Fidea Mkoba (food sales), Palina William (chicken sales), Zainabu Aziz (food sales), Flora Ruana (food sales), Rehema Saidi (food sales) and Emanuel Makwawa (used clothing sales). She knows her subgroup well, as they are neighbors and have shared 2 previous loans together, which they paid back successfully.

Tatu used the previous loans to increase the quantity of different food items in her stall. The new loan, too, will be used for the same purpose. In particular, Tatu plans to buy big sacks of baking flour, cooking oil, and charcoal. She also wishes to open a day business for food sales.
