Mohamed, age 37, is married and has 2 children (14 and 7 years old). His brother-in-law’s children (16 and 17) also live with them. In 1991, Mohamed started two different businesses - used clothing and tomato sales. As a part of his tomato business, Mohamed buys a box of tomatoes at US$9-14, depending on the market price, and sells it with a daily profit of US$6-7. In his other business, Mohamed buys each piece of used clothing at about US$2-3 and manages to earn a daily profit of about US$9. He uses his combined profits to increase the stock of both businesses and to pay school fees for his children. In addition, he employs an assistant to help with both businesses.

Mohamed is the leader of Subgroup C of group Tujikwamue Ukonga (Tujikwamue meaning “progressing from one stage to another” in Swahili, and Ukonga being the location), which totals 55 members. He will be sharing this loan with his subgroup members: Mariamu Sleman (fish sales), Rabia Abdalah (fish and market sales), Joyce David (market sales), Khadija Ally (clothing and charcoal sales), Mery Michaeli (clothing sales), and Jane Vedasto (market sales). Mohamed knows his subgroup well, as they are all neighbors and have shared 2 previous loans from Tujijenge Tanzania, which they paid back successfully.

Mohamed used the previous loans to buy more stock of used clothing and tomatoes. With this new loan, he plans to once again purchase more used clothing.
