Kerti Moses Loan Update

Entrepreneur: Kerti Moses
Location: Badung, Indonesia

Kerti Moses purchased three cows with his loan to sell at a cattle market. His wife Endang cares for the animals for 8-9 months in the “traditional” way, feeding them grass. The children also help to feed the cows after school. It costs roughly Rp. 2 million (Indonesian rupiahs) to raise a cow, and Kerti Moses can sell one for Rp. 5 million. He states that the predominantly Hindu people in East Bali “eat everything,” including beef.

Kerti Moses also raises chicken and pigs, and he tends various crops. In the mornings and afternoons, he borrows a boat and then sells his catch after giving the owner half of his fish.

Kerti Moses now plans to take out a third loan to buy two fishing boats, including motors and nets. He is paying his present loan over 12 months, but he thinks he would require less time to repay a future loan.

Previously, Kerti Moses owned an antiques shop that catered to tourists in the capital city of Denpasar. His business suffered after the bombings in 2002 and 2005, at which point he decided to move back to his village in East Bali.

After moving, Kerti Moses and his wife lived in a very small house with a thatched roof and bamboo walls. With the couple’s business successes, they now have a big house. In the area where they live, it is very difficult to find water. Initially, they had to wait for rainfall, but now they have a well. Kerti Moses has a ministry, and he and his wife provide charitable services to the villagers in their community, including buying medicine and giving out well water.

The couple has three of their own children and adopted four from the village, including two orphans. All children are now in school. The couple tries to save money when they can and already have some funds put away for their children to go to university. They also give pocket money to their children and Rp. 500 for each child that comes to Endang’s English lessons.

This loan was made by the DINARI Foundation in Bali, Indonesia. DINARI stands for “Dian Bhuana Lestari”, which means “lights that shine throughout the world.” The Foundation works to reduce poverty, stimulate small business development, and raise awareness about environmental issues.
