Florence Adu – Gyamfi sells provisions (milk, milo, oats, rice, biscuits, minerals, and mineral water). She is married with three children ages 16, 12 and 8 years respectively. Her husband is a steel bender and his income is low. To help with the family finances, Florence works very hard. In addition to the provisions that she sells, she is also a seamstress and sews dresses for people while at her provision store.

One of the challenges that she faces is that her hand sewing machine is old, so she needs a new machine to help her sew dresses more quickly for people since the old one gives her problems when sewing. Her stock is also going down because she now has to make an advance payment before she receives supplies from her suppliers.

She is therefore asking for a loan of US $1,000 to enable her to make advance payment to her suppliers so that they can supply provisions such as milk, milo, nido, biscuits, sardines, mineral water, and crates of minerals; also, to purchase a new hand sewing machine. She intends to pay the loan back within seven months.

Important Information About This Loan
Please note that Kiva considers loans to this Field Partner, CRAN, to be particularly HIGH RISK. This organization has had very serious delinquency problems brought about by problems with its credit methodology, local environmental shocks including a depletion of local fisheries in its core area of operation (Cape Coast and the Central Province), and insufficient follow up with late clients. Lenders to this business should be aware that there is an increased risk of not getting repaid on this loan due to the challenges facing the Field Partner.

Journal Update

Entrepreneur: Florence Adu Gyamfi
Location: Cape Coast, Ghana

Florence is a married woman of 37 years. She has received an education through middle school. Florence is a seamstress and runs a grocery as well. She began the business because she had an interest in sewing, and then realized that demand for provisions was high. With her third loan from CRAN of 1,000 cedis, she purchased provisions including milo, milk, tinned tomatoes, and tinned fish. She also purchased fabric. After taking out the loan, her profits increased from 100 cedis/month to 150-200 cedis/month. Florence’s susu savings also increased from one cedi per day to five cedis per day. In addition to her susu savings, Florence makes deposits of roughly 10 cedis on occasion into a savings account. She reports that the loan reduced the financial pressure in her house and enabled her to purchase more food than she could previously. In addition, she has recently been able to build a house for her family.

*Susu savings is an informal savings plan run by financial NGOs, credit clubs, and self-help groups. The clients pledge to save a set amount per day, and then for a fee equal to a day’s worth of savings, a collections officer visits each client daily to collect the deposit.
