Update on Amina Said's Kiva Business

Entrepreneur: Amina Said
Location: Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

Amina Said’s food business is doing well, thanks in part to the loan money she received from Kiva. I had a chance to visit with Amina when she came to make her final loan payment at the Makangarawe community bank meeting place in the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

With a broad smile, Amina told me about her business selling cooked fish in her community. She buys fresh fish and prepares them for sale by either smoking or frying. With her loan money she was able to purchase fish, a container to keep her fish, and plastic sheets to serve her fried fish. She also kept some of the money in savings so that she could continue to replenish her stock of fish, when necessary. Amina sells a big fish for 2,000 TSH (1,200 TSH = $1 USD).

Amina’s fish selling business is doing well but there are limited growth options. Amina would one day like to start a larger business, selling grocery items and cold drinks, in her neighborhood.

Amina has used money from her business to help her family buy a plot. She and her husband are now saving money to build a house on the plot.
