Hellen, age 26, is the leader of Subgroup D of group Sungura (Swahili for “rabbit”), which totals 31 members. Hellen owns a beauty salon which she opened in 2004. Before starting this business, she worked as an assistant hairdresser in other salons. Now her salon brings in around 10-15 customers a day and makes about $35-45 a week. Her sister assists her in her work. She lives with her sister and brother at their relatives’ home.

Hellen will be sharing this loan with her subgroup members Mwamtumu Bakari (selling fruits), Godfrey Mwakarobo (selling fruits), Juma Msabaha (photographer), Martha Mpulule (selling chicken), and Stella John (honey vendor). This subgroup has taken out 3 previous loans from Tujijenge Tanzania to enhance their businesses, and they were able to pay each back successfully.

Hellen used the previous loans to pay for her sister’s school fees and to enhance her business. With the new loan, she hopes to purchase more hair treatments and a new hair dryer. Her ultimate dream is to one day open a pharmacy.

Hellen's salon is wonderful Entrepreneur: Subgroup D Of Group Sungura Location: Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania Hellen paid the loan back successfully and her business is going on well. With the loan, she bought a dryer for about $167 and salon equipments for about $58 As a result; her profit have increased by about $25 a month!
