A true Kiva success story, Zuhra and her husband have completely transformed their once small business selling 2-3 kg of tea at a tiny stall in the main bazaar of the town of Spitamen, into a full-fledged wholesaling operation that supplies the rest of the market with grain, oil, candy, and other products. Inside the store, that Zuhra and her husband were able to build thanks to their loans from both Kiva and MicroInvest, the shelves are stocked to the max and everything is organized in a very professional manner. I am amazed that Zuhra has been able to make such a leap from tea merchant to wholesale supplier and she tells me that she owes much of her success to the help of her many microloans. Meeting peole such as Zuhra renew my faith in the transformative power of microfinance. “If I have been do all this in the past six years, in a few more years I can certainly start buying full containers of grain that weigh several tons,” she says with the confidence in her abilities to transform both her life and her business. No longer is she beholden to the forces that once kept her in poverty, but she now knows and feels that her fate lies in her own two hands. Twice a week, Zuhra goes to the Afghan bazaar in Khujand to buy her goods, purchasing anywhere from $1500 to $2400 worth of tea, oil, rice, sugar, etc., every time. She expresses her heartfelt thanks to both Kiva and MicroInvest, and says that it is because of their help that she has been able to pay for her store, her daughter’s recent marriage, and a new home that Zuhra and her husband recently finished building.
