About SELFINA

SELFINA is engaged in economic empowerment of women in Tanzania through leasing and leaseback facility as a practical way to achieve economic and social emancipation of women.

SELFINA has taken a lead role as a pioneer of micro-credit in Tanzania through Micro Leasing. Customs and traditions in Tanzania normally make it difficult for women to own land and assets, thus termed not-creditworthy by financial institutions as they lack tangible collateral assets. This leads to poor financial support hence poor access to basic needs and services for women with low incomes.

SELFINA buys and leases equipment to women. Where a client needs working capital SELFINA buys equipments from the said client extending a loan to her and then leases back the same equipment – a process called "sale and leaseback" arrangement.

Update on Aisha Saidi who received a loan from you through Kiva!

Entrepreneur: Aisha Saidi
Location: Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

Mambo from Dar es Salaam! The purpose of this journal is to update you on Aisha, a SELFINA client and micro-entrepreneur, who received a loan from you through Kiva.

I recently went to visit Aisha at her pharmacy in the Ukonga neighborhood of Dar es Salaam. Her pharmacy is well situated in a bustling area and she had several customers stop by during the course of our chat – business for her is going well! The loan that you helped her with is Aisha’s fourth loan with SELFINA – she has graduated from a first loan of $275 to her current loan of $875. Aisha decided to open a pharmacy four years ago because she received some partial training as a nurse and was interested in getting into the health services industry. She used her first loan to stock her pharmacy and has used subsequent loans to buy larger quantities and more varieties of medicines – thus allowing her to serve a larger client base. This has enabled Aisha to increase her monthly profits from $70 to $175 over the past couple of years. She has used these extra profits to open a second pharmacy in the Yomba-Buza neighborhood, which is managed by two employees, as well as towards paying school fees and utility bills. She is married and has three children – her oldest is in grade four, her second child is in nursery, while the littlest is still at home. In the future, she aspires to become a wholeseller or supplier for pharmacies in the area since there aren’t too many medicine suppliers in her area – she is hopeful that this will enable her to make larger profits.

SELFINA aims to continue to assist Aisha and other women like her and empower them towards financial security and increased confidence through microloans.

Thank you for your generosity in supporting Aisha! To continue to support women like her and lend to SELFINA borrowers, please click here:
