The communal Bank Estrellas del Cielo (Stars of Heaven) is a consolidated women’s group. It is characteristically distinctive, as can be noticed in the group organization and the grace with which they treat foreigners. It is important to note that the majority of the women are asking for the same amount of money, thus reflecting their common development in the business world.

Although only two women in this group can write and all have overwhelming responsibilities in their homes, you notice ambition and hope in their eyes.

Before asking for their first loan with Friendship Bridge, most of these women worked in their homes as housewives, while others wove beautiful huipiles (native Mayan textiles and blouses) without significant financial gain. However, with this loan from us, they’ve decided to change their lives.

Most of the women have decided to continue weaving the native textiles but more successfully. With these loans they’ll be able to expand their businesses. Manuela Ambrosio Ixtos commented that with the next loan that she’s going to get, she’ll be able to buy high quality materials at wholesale and reduce her operating costs. The loan will also be used to raise farm animals, production of textiles, and to purchase fertilizer and seeds.

The dreams of the women who participate in Estrellas del Cielo are concentrated on the futures of their children. The majority of the women wish to expand their business in order to gain a little more money and be able to send their children to school. This way they’ll be able to spare their children the difficult experiences they had growing up on the hard streets of Nahualá.
