About SELFINA

SELFINA is engaged in economic empowerment of women in Tanzania through leasing and leaseback facility as a practical way to achieve economic and social emancipation of women.

SELFINA has taken a lead role as a pioneer of micro-credit in Tanzania through Micro Leasing. Customs and traditions in Tanzania normally make it difficult for women to own land and assets, thus termed not-creditworthy by financial institutions as they lack tangible collateral assets. This leads to poor financial support hence poor access to basic needs and services for women with low incomes.

SELFINA buys and leases equipment to women. Where a client needs working capital SELFINA buys equipments from the said client extending a loan to her and then leases back the same equipment – a process called "sale and leaseback" arrangement.

Thank you for your loan through Kiva to Asha Mhando, a SELFINA client and micro-entrepreneur. The purpose of this journal is to update you on Asha and the status of her business. As you are aware, your generosity enabled Asha to receive a loan of $275 through Kiva. Asha used the loan towards buying cooking implements and ingredient supplies for her small scale cooking business – she makes chapatti, which is a local bread, in bulk every morning and sells it as a filling yet nutritious breakfast in her neighborhood. To supplement her income, she has also started selling traditional African cloth, called kanga and vitenge, in bustling Dar es Salaam neighborhoods. Locals buy this cloth and fashion them into colorful outfits. She used part of her loan to buy traditional cloth in bulk as well as to stock her small grocery stand from which she sells fresh fruits and vegetables. Clearly Asha is an extremely hard working woman! Her monthly profits have increased from less than $150 to over $200 since she took out the loan. Her family assists her in running her business and she has used her additional profits to increase her family’s food consumption as well as increase her personal savings. In the future, Asha is planning to request a loan of $600 from SELFINA to provide her with capital to start a small café in the Mbezi beach area of Dar, which her eldest daughter will manage. SELFINA aims to continue to assist Asha and other women like her and empower them towards financial security and increased confidence through microloans. Thank you very much for supporting Asha!
