About SELFINA

SELFINA is engaged in economic empowerment of women in Tanzania through leasing and leaseback facility as a practical way to achieve economic and social emancipation of women.

SELFINA has taken a lead role as a pioneer of micro-credit in Tanzania through Micro Leasing. Customs and traditions in Tanzania normally make it difficult for women to own land and assets, thus termed not-creditworthy by financial institutions as they lack tangible collateral assets. This leads to poor financial support hence poor access to basic needs and services for women with low incomes.

SELFINA buys and leases equipment to women. Where a client needs working capital SELFINA buys equipments from the said client extending a loan to her and then leases back the same equipment – a process called "sale and leaseback" arrangement.

Update on Patricia who received a loan from you through Kiva!

Entrepreneur: Patricia Lukindo
Location: Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

Mambo from Dar es Salaam! The purpose of this journal is to update you on Patricia Lukindo, a SELFINA client and micro-entrepreneur, who received a loan from you through Kiva.

Patricia used her loan of $275 to buy soda, juice, and biscuits in bulk for her general store. Since the store was doing extremely well, she wanted to use the profits from it to expand into a business that could allow her to make even larger profits – so she invested in a beauty salon and used the money that she got from selling the store’s inventory to buy hair dryers, and to pay rent on the salon. While she used to make TSh 75,000 per month from the store after receiving the loan, she earns approximately $400 per month from the salon! She has used the increased profits to buy and donate books and clothes to a local orphanage in Tabata, and to repay her loan. She is planning to take out a second loan to help her buy dryers and steamers for her salon.

SELFINA aims to continue to assist Patricia and other women like her and empower them towards financial security and increased confidence through microloans. Thank you for your generosity in supporting Patricia! To continue to lend to SELFINA borrowers, please click here:
