Isabel Chale was born on March 4th, 1969 in Catembe a province of Maputo. She is 38 years old, married and mother of 5 children. She was raised by her uncles in Maputo where she studied until the 6th grade. After school she sold Badjías (a snack made of fried beans) to help her family. After she was done with school she continued to work with baking and selling bread.
When she was 19 years old her husband started to sell fish. The business did not do well so he got a job with a company and worked in the Popular Market in Maputo for 6 years. When the company closed he started selling vegetables and other basic products in a stand.

She was introduced to Hluvuku by friends and requested her first loan with which she started building her business. She is building a mini market.
Today she has 2 employees and supports 8 people.
She buys her inventory from Maputo, rents a car then brings it back to her market.
In the end of the month and summers she makes the most money averaging 10.000mt selling cereals, vegetables, oil and sugar.
Her business is doing well and her income base is of 15.000mt a month. With this income she is improving her home and saving.
With the loan of 60,000mt, Isabel improved the building of the store she is renting, in the future she wants to diversify her products and buy a bigger car to transport products. These loans have changed Isabel’s life and she is very enthusiastic about the future.

Business is doing just great!!

Entrepreneur: Isabel Chali
Location: Catembe, Maputo, Mozambique

Isabel is doing well! While serving a few clients, Isabel talked to us about her latest loan with Hluvuku, Kiva’s first loan. Isabel used the money to buy merchandize and increase her inventory, consequently increasing her daily sales.

Isabel has a general store for more than 14 years now. With the help of 7 previous loans with Hluvuku and her hard work spirit Isabel was able to build and consolidate the largest mini-market in Catembe, a fishing village 10min ferryboat away from the capital city Maputo. Isabel’s most famous products are rice, fish and peanut. Isabel makes around MTn 10,000 per day. At the end of the months she can make up to MTn 15,000 and in the middle of the month she makes some times only MTn 7,000. Isabel reports a monthly profit of MTn 30,000, which helps her support her 5 children, one of which is already attending university. Isabel has 2 employees that help her with the store and at home and she pays them a monthly salary of MTn 1,000.

Isabel goes personally to Maputo every other day to buy merchandize, renting a car to transport the goods. She has to pay MTn 250 for a car to transport the goods from the warehouse in Maputo to the ferryboat, than MTn 150 for a person to carry at the ferryboat and MTn 150 for another car to transport the goods to her store. That is why transportation is the business strongest difficulty.

Isabel is very grateful for all her loans with Hluvuku, as she knows most of what she has is due to the loans. She intends to keep asking for loans until she can, and one day maybe use a loan to buy a small car to help with the transportation of merchandize. In the future Isabel would also like to build a fence around her house and to repair her house, as it is quite old already.
