Mariam Bamba is a 30-year-old dynamic woman. She lives with her cohabitant and their 3 children in Adjamé, a populated suburb in the north of the Abidjan district. She is a fruits and legumes seller in the Adjamé market, where she has been operating for more than 10 years. Her cohabitant is a taxi driver, and the family has been able to send 2 of their kids to school. Mariam, who benefited from her first loan from AE&I in July 2004, has been an excellent performer and has consistently taken advantage of these loans to improve her business. The volume of her goods has progressively increased. She will use the loan to purchase onions and tomatoes in bulk for gross sale.

Update on Mariam Bamba and AE&I

Entrepreneur: Mariam Bamba
Location: Adjamé-forum, Cote D'Ivoire

Dear Lender,

This is an update on your loan to Mariam Bamba in Côte d’Ivoire.

Before providing more information about this entrepreneur, we want to let you know that Kiva has terminated its partnership with the Field Partner Afrique Emergence & Investissements (AE&I), who managed this loan. Kiva has collected all outstanding funds, relating to this loan, from AE&I. To learn more about why Kiva has terminated this partnership, visit AE&I’s Field Partner page at: http://www.kiva.org/about/aboutPartner?id=53.

Please read the journal written by Kiva Fellow Megan Berwick for more information about the entrepreneur that you supported.

Mariam was AE&I’s first microfinance client at the Abobo Market in Abidjan. She sells oranges and mangoes, which she stores in a large room at night, and brings out during the day to sell in bulk and individually. She works together primarily with her 15 year old daughter, and her other children help out at times as well.

Mariam has taken three loans of 30,000 CFA for a period of four months each over the last five years that she has worked with AE&I. She reimbursed every loan punctually and most recently increased the amount she took to 50,000 CFA ($120) for the same period of time. She uses these loans to purchase fruit in bulk to increase her margins on her own sales.

Thank you for helping to change the lives of borrowers around the world with Kiva.

Sincerely,

The Kiva Team
