Deborah Nabaggala owns Debby’s Salon where she has run her hair styling business for 12 years. Her salon sits about 75’ back from the busy highway. On busy highways, buildings tend to sit back. That area between the highway and the buildings is always filled with activity. People cooking on small charcoal stoves, matatoo’s, taxis, stopping to drop off and pick up new customers, boda boda’s, motorbikes, waiting to take paying customers and just a constant flow of people.
Deborah’s business has a good location and a good clientele. As with many hair salons all over the world, it is place for women to visit, sit with their babies and pass the time.
With her loan, Deborah plans to buy a generator. This is a big and important purchase, as electricity goes out quite regularly. Clients will tend to go to places that have back-up power. She has a well stocked salon and is a very welcoming individual.

Debbie's Salon - Update, Uganda

Entrepreneur: Deborah Nabaggala
Location: Nansana, Uganda

When I went to Debbie’s Salon to speak to Deborah, I found a pretty impressive place. For a start, there was a professionally painted sign on the front, which is quite rare in these parts. Inside, there were large mirrors, good lighting, and a clean tiled floor. But Deborah was in town that day, and there was only Agnes, her assistant and a student trainee.

So I spoke to Agnes about the hair salon. She told me that they treat an average of five clients per day. They charge $2 for a shampoo and set, $6 for a retouch of ‘unruly African hair’, $3 for a nourishing treatment (to soften African hair) and $6 for braids. Agnes has worked in the salon for one year is is really enjoying it.

I asked her if Deborah had bought anything new for the business lately. Agnes said that the only purchases the salon has made in the past year has been for products used. Perhaps Deborah has used the loan for personal expenses, which is not uncommon for the clients I visit.

Agnes is pictured with her trainee inside Debbie's Salon.
