Rose Kawala lives in the rural village of Nansana on the outskirts of Kampala, Uganda. She has a tailoring business. During the day she has a sewing machine set on the concrete entrance to Debby’s Salon, located on the busy highway . At home she has another sewing machine. In is not uncommon for women tailors to have two machines: one for home and one on the street next to a business. In the picture you can see some of the fabric that she uses to make garments.

She is a new client and has only been in her lending group for one month. Generally, a person needs to be in the lending group for at least a month before there are eligible for a loan. With her loan she plans to buy another machine and some fabric. She wants another machine because she is planning on starting a sewing school for young girls. Young girls often have to drop out of school to take care of sick parents, so a sewing school gives them a trade in which to earn a living.

By the time I went to Rose Kawala’s business in Nansana, she had gone to Kampala to buy fabric for her business. She has a tailoring business just at the entrance to Debby’s Salon belonging to a fellow member in her lending group, and located on the busy highway to Wakiso. Rose has three manual sewing machines for her business and because of the limited space; she keeps two at her home and would work on them at times, especially on Sundays. Customers bring to her all sorts of material to be made especially for women and children and at times she makes the clothes using her own fabric to be displayed for sale. She used her loan to buy fabric for her business and as well bought a sewing machine so as to realize her dream of opening up a sewing school for girls that drop out of school in favor of boys. Among the list of girls she has are girls that dropped out of school, married at a tender age yet the marriages ended prematurely with one or two kids to cater for. Others are childless orphans with nothing to do for a living. It’s surely a trade for future development. Before the loans, Rose had no such dreams but after associating with fellow business women, such good ideas came in for business development.
