To reach Florence’s business, you must go off the paved road for several miles. You will come to a very rural village where life is very quiet and pastoral. Cicada’s are heard in the trees. There is a pace to the day that is slower than the city. As in all of Uganda, there is always a stream of people walking, walking, walking.

Florence has a produce hut where she buys in larger quantities than a normal produce stand, but has less variety. She sells Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes, and cassava. People arrive with small plastic bags and she counts and fills their orders.

She has been operating the produce hut for six years and has been in a lending group for eleven years. She is widowed and has two children. Florence will use her loan to increase her inventory and sales.

Journal Entrepreneur: Florence Namitego Location: Bulenga, Uganda Indeed Namitego Florence is managing. This time round I was unable to go over to her business but by the look of things plus her repayments procedure, she was very active. She managed to repay her loan promptly and even got another one recently and life is moving on. When she bought the products with the loan, she was able to save some amount that enabled her to pay for her children’s school fees in addition to part of the loan that she is financing now; and life goes on. She says she can never stop borrowing because she has no other helper with her family and no one can give you money freely.
