Sra. Eva, 66, was born in Bellavista in the Peruvian "departamento" of La Libertad. She went to a primary school there but no farther and she was needed by her parents from an early age to help out at home. When she was a young girl, she ran away from her mother's abuse to Huangamarca with the man who is now her husband.

They started from nothing after their families refused further help. They worked buying and selling grain and other foodstuffs but they lacked capital initially so they accepted an invitation from a neighbor to join the Huangamarca community bank. With their first loan of S/.300 (300 Peruvian soles or about US$96) from Manuela Ramos, they raised enough money to start their business and ultimately earned enough to buy their house and land for farming.

Eva had two children, one of whom died suddently, something that cast her into a deep depression during which she abandoned the business temporarily. She eventually overcame the tragedy, though, and returned to the business with the help of a new loan from Manuela Ramos of S/.1,000 (about US$333), to be repaid in 6 months. She will use the loan to buy potatoes, wheat and beans that she'll haul to the coast, along with what her husband produces on his plot of land, for sale there.

Her dream is to buy a house in the city where she can quietly spend her remaining years.
