Mrs. Suong Ey, age 50, is a housewife with seven children. Several of her children work in garment factories, earning $70 per month each and others of her children are still students. Her husband works producing palm sugar and fishing, earning about $7 per day in revenue. To make palm sugar, he climbs up the palm tree to tap the sap. He then boils the sap to produce sugar and sells it in the market.

Mrs. Suong Ey would like to borrow $1,200 to purchase additional tools to increase the quantity of palm sugar that her husband can produce, thereby increasing their income and financing their children’s education.

She is pictured with her husband in their home.

Journal Update.

Entrepreneur: Suong Ey
Location: Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia

Suong Ey took out a loan of US$1200 to purchase additional tools to help produce the sugar, but she changed her mind when she received the money. Instead, she decided that it would be more profitable for her to purchase a motorbike for her husband to operate a motor-taxi business and the leftover is used to renovate their house. She has been pleased with the results of her investments and can see her business growing. With her increased profits, she has been able to purchase yam seed, fertilizer and insecticide to help her farm. She has been very pleased with her decision and is grateful for the ability to better support her family.

Again, she states that the loan is very useful as it is provide a chance to all poor entrepreneurs to start and sustain their businesses. Finally, she would like to say thanks to all lenders for interest helping Cambodian entrepreneurs like her family.

CREDIT MFI is an independent Cambodian faith-based organization. It aims to empower the economically active poor and small entrepreneurs by providing inclusive financial services.
