Felipe, age 26, married and father of 2 children, is a native of Boane. He describes life as a challenge but also full of opportunities. He had to interrupt his studies due to financial circumstances and, like others, he was born to a poor family. He was obligated to go work for a craftsperson at age 8, where he acquired work experience and cultivated the entrepreneurial spirit, despite not having any training in business. From his monthly income, he managed to save an amount that helped him build a mini-store with conventional goods and start his own business. His wife is manager of the business and both work to survive. After some time, he heard of HLUVUKU-ADSEMA, approached it and requested a loan in the amount of 10 thousand meticais (US$250) to expand his business which, as he tells it, performs well for him. With the income, he has been able to obtain land to build his own house. At this time, he lives in a room loaned to him and he plans to live a dignified life with his wife (his family). He says that he plans, at this time, to expand the business to be able to employ 2 more people, along with himself and his wife, to be able to improve service to customers and increase the family income for a good education of their children, as well as to help other family members. The same business benefits a population of around 3500 women in Boane who used to have to travel 30 km to the city of Maputo for hairdressing.

Update on Filipe Marrengula's Kiva Business!

Entrepreneur: Filipe Marrengula
Location: Boane, Maputo, Mozambique

At the young age of twenty-seven, Sr. Marrengula has seven years of business experience running a kiosk grocery in one small building and a hair salon in another. He manages the kiosk operations, while his wife manages the hair salon on the other side of the driveway. Behind both of these small buildings is the home he shares with his parents, wife, and two children ages five and one years old.

Venancio (his preferred name) actually used this loan to increase the stock of his grocery kiosk. Here they sell a variety of crackers, cookies, and drinks as well as staples such as sugar and flour.

The greatest cost for the business is two trips a week by bus to the capital city of Maputo (30km away) in order to purchase merchandise. In addition, these winter months are also generally a bit slower, but they make ends meet through a more consistent and steady hair salon business with upwards of 40 clients a week for hair wash and styles.

With profits from the business, Venancio pays for household costs and the schooling of his eldest child. In addition, he and his wife are in the process of building a new home on the other side of town.

Looking to the future, Venancio expects an increase in traffic for the kiosk during the summer when more people are out enjoying cold refreshments into the evenings. He will likely take a new loan in order to purchase more goods to satisfy the increase in demand. In addition to this, he and his wife hope to open a new store closer to their new home and manage that, while hiring employees to run the existing stores.
