Rosa was the last one I talked to during the group’s meeting. Despite a strong rush of time, since we had to be in our next appointment, I was able to chat with her for some minutes. She is 18 years old and is single with no kids. She finished middle school which is pretty above average for her community. She is a craftswoman, taught by her mother. She weaves and embroiders tablecloths and napkins. Her mother’s embroidery is well known amongst the community so that is why she wants to continue the family’s tradition. It is important to mention that each community has its own patterns and styles, that is why passing the skills is so important. With her loan she was able to buy material for her craftworks, allowing her to stock some of it and to access discount prices for large volumes. She lives with he parents and works together with her mother. There is a local buyer who comes every month to pick up the merchandise and take it to the main cities, like San Cristobal de las Casas, when then the items are sold mainly to tourists. She says she is really grateful with Alsol (Kiva’s local partner) and with Kiva lenders for giving her the opportunity to be a productive woman. She hopes to continue in the borrowing programs of Alsol. Her credit history has been remarkable and each time she is able to increase her loan amount, which enables her to do more with the borrowed money.
