Mariela is 29 years old and has a 5 years old son. She currently lives at home with her parents, where is is developing a bookstore / bazaar. Mariela's husband left his family when he went to Spain to find better employment opportunities, but unfortunately, he never returned and doesn't send any money from Spain.

Mariela has been working in her bookstore for 5 years. In order to make best use of the retail space, she also sells presents. She counts with the help of her mother, who takes care of the store when Mariela has to go out to buy products to restock the bookstore.

In her neighborhood, there is no competition and this is the only bookstore / bazaa. This helps a lot and enables her to earn a good income.

With the current loan, Mariela wants to buy presents of 5 Bs to 50 Bs., architectural books of 20 of 200 Bs, and other materials for the bookstore.

Her credit history is excellent. Mariela has shown both to Agrocapital as well as to other financing institutes to be a responsible person with a good repayment history. Please note that the photo with this loan description shows Mariela separate from her business. The latter is because Mariela wasn't home when we went to make the picture: only her mother was.

Mariela's Kiva loan

Entrepreneur: Mariela Pamela Ortiz Cuenca
Location: Cochabamba, Bolivia

On the afternoon that I went to visit Mariela’s bookstore I found her mother working, since Mariela had gone to the market to buy more books and gifts to sell. Mariela and her mother sell a variety of inexpensive gifts, books, and some personal hygiene articles. Mariela spent her Kiva loan on notebooks, pencils and paper for her store. “We try to have everything,” says Sra. Cuenca. “My daughter lives at La Cancha [a local market where the two buy their supplies],” she laughs. Kids often come into the store looking for a particular book, and if Mariela doesn’t have it in stock she usually promises to get it in a day or two.

While I was chatting with Sra. Cuenca a little boy came in asking for a zampoña, a traditional Andean flute. Sra. Cuenca only had small ones in stock, and this boy wanted a big one. “When do you need it by?” she asked him, treating this 7-year-old boy with all the respect that one might an adult. “Tomorrow,” he answered. Sra. Cuenca thought about it, then decided she couldn’t get one so soon, but I was impressed by the very fact that she considered rushing out to buy a new stock of $2 flutes just so that this boy could have what he wanted. Sra. Cuenca says that the store supplies children from six different area schools with books, notebooks and pencils. Mariela’s store is the only one of its kind in the area and has a reputation for giving great customer service and offering a wide variety of products. The store is well-known for the variety of laminated picture cards it sells, too, and people come from 5 kilometers away just to buy these laminas.

Sra. Cuenca says that in the future, she and her daughter would like to buy a photocopy machine for the store, and hope to take out another loan from AgroCapital so that they can do so.
