Gloria Erlinda Costop Tol, 26, buys and sells huipiles, the traditional Mayan women’s woven blouse. She can buy one from an individual weaver for about US$7 and sell it on market days for almost $10. She can sell about a dozen a month, making a profit approaching $36, a significant boost to her finances. She’ll use this loan to buy more huipiles for resale. (At the women’s meeting where Gloria was interviewed, it was not market day and she did not have any stock. However, the woman on the left is wearing one of Gloria’s huipiles. You see Gloria on the right.)

Gloria got her start four years ago by borrowing a little money from her brother, but now she uses the Friendship Bridge loans for working capital. What she’d love to do some day is have a big store or deposito with lots of items including drinks and the things everybody needs in daily life.

Gloria is still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Stan, which hit the area at 8:30 am on October 5, 2005. Her house was destroyed by a landslide and she lost nearly everything she owned. Her husband’s family was killed. But life is going on, and they are in the process of rebuilding a house. Gloria has three kids aged 2, 5, and 7, and she does have the 7-year-old in school.

Gloria Erlinda Costop Tol Entrepreneur: Gloria Erlinda Costop Tol Location: Tecpán, Chimaltenango, Guatemala Unfortunately, Gloria was not home when we went to visit, but we were able to locate her sister who has a bakery nearby. She told us that business is going very well for Gloria. She is very pleased with her loans from Friendship Bridge- so pleased that her sister is now considering joining her solidarity group! Gloria’s family is still suffering from the disaster of Hurricane Stan, but little by little they are rebuilding their home and their lives. The loan officer in charge of Gloria’s solidarity group, La Asunción, showed her payment history, and Gloria has been able to make all of her payments on time and in full.
