Rosemarie Simon, a 38-year-old business owner in Trou-du-Nord, Haiti, has overcome the limitation of her illiteracy by operating a meal preparation business. Left single after a previous marriage, Rosemarie supports herself by providing cooked meals -- often comprised of plantains, rice, and locally grown vegetables -- to her community. Her business is adjacent to the main bridge entering town, a prime location in Trou-du-Nord for a business such as hers. Rosemarie will use this first loan to expand her inventory of food and supplies to better meet the needs of her community.

Note: Rosemarie is one of five microentrepreneurs in his Bank of Hope solidarity group, all of whom have gone through Esperanza's business training courses. Each of the five members will receive a share of this $750 loan for his/her respective businesses and will be accountable to each other for repaying his/her share of this loan together. This group-lending methodology ensures that members cooperate to help one another repay their loans and invest wisely in their businesses and families.
