Jany studied to be an obstetrician but before finishing her degree she realized that that would not be the job for her and found a job selling tickets for an airline, AeroContinente. When AeroContinente folded she got a job at a local travel agency which she loved because she got to meet new and interesting people daily. However, the travel agency often did not pay her on time and nine years ago she decided to quit and open her own travel agency with her sister. They have since incorporated another owner and are very successful, in large part because of Jany´s love for the business and her experience and connections within the industry. She and her partners would like to expand in two manners- they want to purchase another computer to be able to serve more clients at once (they currently only have one computer) and they also eventually want to open another branch of their office, this time in Cusco, the tourist hub of Peru and only 6 hours by bus from Juliaca.

Jany is a delightful and successful travel agent! Her business is very inviting and she greets every customer with a smile. She says one of her favorite things about being a travel agent is constantly interacting with new people and talking about their past and future adventures.

Jany was hoping to purchase a new computer with this loan, but it was not enough money and she had other bills (such as rent for her office) that needed immediate attention. Her internet and phone bill costs are also rising, and for only one computer and one phone line her monthly payment is 400 Soles, about $135. Jany also takes out loans from another local MFI, and would really prefer to only take out one loan, but can’t yet because of the limit on the loan amount. It can get confusing and is an additional burden to have to worry about managing and paying back two loans.

Even though she feels slightly limited by the amount of her loan, Jany’s business is having great success and she is able to add to her savings monthly. She has great dreams for her agency and has every intention of seeing them come true. Jany knows that the key to continuing success is creativity in being one step ahead of the competition. After investing in another computer (which would greatly increase their ability to serve more customers- she comically demonstrates for us the chaos of having a customer on the phone and one waiting at her desk and trying to make plans for both on one computer), Jany would like to invest in a combi (a small bus that is very common for transport in Peru) that would transport visitors around Juliaca and to other cities, especially Cuzco and neighboring Puno on Lake Titicaca. She would also like to open a branch in each of these cities.

Jany has three children- a 21 year old studying law, a 19 year old studying industrial engineering, and a 5 year old who’s just beginning to study! Jany has come a very long way since her first job selling tickets for AeroContinente, and she couldn’t be more passionate and excited with the direction in which her business is headed. She thanks you for your support!
