Lule Margaret

Margaret is a 55-year-old married mother with six children aged between 14 and 23 years. All her children go to school. She resides in and owns a three-roomed house, where she is staying with seven people. The family has access to electricity and piped water and gets three meals a day. She incurs transport costs to and from Kawala. She works in a semi-urban area in the outskirts of Kampala.

Margaret works seven days a week. She receives an average of 30 customers a day and sells to all categories of people on a retail basis. She owns a canteen selling candles and water. Her major business challenges include ever increasing prices of candle wax and the rainy season, which hinders her customers to reach out to her because she works from an open place.

Her monthly expenses include rent for her business premises, feeding the family and medication. She has been in this business for seven years and with MCDT for four years, servicing her ninth loan. Margaret joined MCDT because it was near her home and it was easy to work with it. She wants to use this loan to buy more boxes of candle wax and to pay her water bill. She is aspiring to see her business grow bigger and to start distributing samosas, chapatti and pancakes to different nearby schools.
