Argentina Vargas Ampie is 50 years old and lives with her husband, two daughters, a grandson, a son-in-law, and an adopted son. She lives in the small rural Costa Rican community of La Esperanza, which is located in San José de Upala, Alajuela Province. The main business development activities in the area are cattle breeding (for both beef and milk) and agriculture.

Doña Argentina is a farmer, specifically growing bananas the past two years. She says the market for this product is very good. As a result of her work, Argentina’s living conditions have improved considerably. She also says she has grown as a person and has acquired much knowledge. In addition, her self-esteem has increased and she feels greater security.

At the moment, Doña Argentina hopes to expand her farm so she is requesting a microloan of 680,000 colones. In order to maintain her latest crop of bananas, she will purchase fertilizers and other supplies. Argentina expects a good harvest from this investment. This crop usually commands a high selling price, so she wants to increase her production.

Doña Argentina is a member of the Women’s Community Credit Enterprise of La Esperanza, which is composed solely of women. This microfinance institute specializes in supporting women who are heads of households but not professionals. It is one of 100 partner organizations that comprise EDESA in Costa Rica. This is Argentina’s fifth loan and she hopes to continue growing personally and financially. She is also an active participant of her local credit organization.
