Djiguifa is an association of women who are all married and in large traditional families.  The women average 31 years of age and 3 children each living in the Djaka district (Kirango) of Markala (4th administrative region of the Republic of Mali).  They know one another through ties of kinship, marriage, and friendship, and they operate in the same revenue-generating business, namely the buying and selling fish in all its various forms (fresh, dried, smoked, fried, etc.)

The group members are on their fifth solidarity loan after having repaid the four previous ones with the micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso.  They intend to use this new loan to buy 72 baskets of fresh fish and 100 bars of ice (furnished by transporters coming from Bamako).  Supplies of fresh fish are gotten locally on the banks of the Niger River.  While a good portion of this fish is dried (whether on gravel or on straw or on seccos), the other portion is sold in any of its forms:

The fresh fish is sold locally in Kirango and in Diamarabougou Markala. The fresh fish kept on ice is sold in Ségou (at the Château Market) and Bamako.  The dried fish (part of which is reserved until the waters recede and until the off-season when the women earn more money) is sold especially in Dougabougou, Siribala, Niono, Shango, Boussin, and at the weekly fair of Ségou.  The smoked fish is essentially sold in Ségou.

Sales are made generally in cash to a diversity of customers locally along the river, at the marketplaces of Kirango and Diamarabougou (Markala), or door-to-door through the districts of the village.

The group members think they'll be able to realize an average monthly profit of 60,100 francs CFA that will be used to cover sundry family needs and to assist with societal events.

Their ambition is to buy animals in order to build a future for themselves and their children, since a paternal home belongs to everyone but is not the property of anyone.
