The members of the Sarakognouma group are all married women who are, on average, 46 years old with 2 children. With their husbands and children, they live in large traditional households and reside in the village of Djinina, Fana sub-prefecture, Koulikoro region, in the Republic of Mali.
They know each other through neighbourhood and familial relations, and run businesses selling various items such as milk, firewood, charcoal, cereals, etc.
These women joined the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso with the goal of making their lucrative businesses more durable. They are working on their eleventh loan, and all ten of their previous loans were repaid properly.
With this loan, they intend to buy 400 bags of charcoal and a large quantity of various other items such as milk and cereals. The cereals, milk, and charcoal are bought at retail in the neighbouring villages, and are resold in cash or on credit on-the-spot in Djinina and at the Fana exit station to a clientele composed of men and women.
They each estimate earning an average profit of 20,000 FCFA per month. A portion of the profits will be reinvested in their businesses, and the rest used to pay for the daily household expenses.
