The members of the Djantoyerela group are married women who are, on average, 51 years old with three children. With their husbands and children, they live in large traditional households and reside in the village of Djinina, Fana sub-prefecture, Koulikoro region, in the Republic of Mali.
They know each other through neighbourhood and familial relations. They run businesses selling various items such as charcoal, firewood, clothing, etc.
These women work with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso with the goal of making their lucrative businesses more durable. They are working on their eleventh loan, and their previous ten loans were all repaid properly.
With this loan, they intend to buy clothing for men and women and a large quantity of charcoal. The clothing and charcoal are bought in Fana and in the neighbouring villages and then sold on-the-spot in Djinina to a clientele composed of men and women. They each intend to realize an average profit of 25,000 FCFA per month. A portion of the profits will be reinvested in their businesses, and the rest used to meet the daily family expenses.
