Mrs. Agnès Berthé, 36, lives in a monogamous family, with just her three children (because her husband has gone abroad), in the Koko neighborhood of the prefecture of Koutiala (Sikasso region).

Madame Agnès did not have the good fortune to go to school, so she began to work at money-earning activities early on, to be precise, at transforming 'néré' nuts into 'sounbala' (a condiment which is traditionally much prized in Mali and West Africa) together with her mother, as well as all the women of her ethnicity, the ' Minianka' people. This work is very remunerative since she can turn 2 sacks of 100 kg of 'néré' nuts into 'sounbala' every week, bringing in a good deal of income.

In order to satisfy her clientele as far as quality and quantity go, she turned to the micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso a year ago. She is on her second individual loan, the first having been correctly reimbursed.

This new loan will serve to buy a large stock of 'néré' nuts, in the big open-air market of the town of Koutiala, from wholesalers. Madame Agnès retails and wholesales her "sounbala' in Sikasso and often in Bamako, to a clientele composed of women and of other retailers.

With the increase in her raw material, she hopes to see a monthly profit of 120,000 F CFA which she will use to repay the interest on the loan and cover the daily living expenses of her family, investing any remainder back into her business.
