Rafael Antonio Busto Ampie is 37 years old and lives in the San Ignacio neighborhood with his wife, who works as a fruit and vegetable merchant in the Masaya market, to help him with household expenses like light, water and school expenses. They have three children: a 17-year-old, a 10-year-old and a newborn. The eldest helps with the crop cleaning during his free time. Rafael has been a farmer for the last 25 years thanks to his parents, who gave him a plot of land where he can farm and see to the care of his three children. The greatest problem he faces is being able to diversify his crops of pitahayas (dragon fruit) which are heavily damaged by pests. He will use these funds to buy fertilizers to improve his plantings and is grateful to Afodenic for the approval of his 7th loan and for the technical assistance it provides that allows him to have a better crop yield and thereby sell at better prices and repay his loan in a timely fashion.
