The community bank Nueva Semilla was formed in the city of Cuenca. This city is characterised by the four rivers that bathe the city, its people´s artisanal skills and succulent gastronomy which attracts tourists from Equador and abroad.

El Bankito Nueva Semilla is made up of a group of women who share the goal of improving their own situation and that of their family through training and initiation into micro-business development to improve their economic situation and quality of life.

María Carmen Ayala Llanos is a member of the community bank Nueva Semilla. She lives on the outskirts of Cuenca in the Carmen de Guzho community, located in the Tierra Blanca district.

María is 51 years old and married, and the fruit of her marriage has produced eight children of 29, 27, 23, 22, 19, 15, 13 and 11 years of age. Her first four children are already married. Her 19 year old daughter stays at home since she suffers from rheumatism. Her 13 year old son no longer studies but helps her with domestic chores. Her 15 year old son works with her laying laminated floors and her youngest child studies at José Rafael Arízaga community school. Her husband works in construction, which helped them to build their own house.

María raises guinea pigs, pigs and hens. She has to spread her time to include other activities such as domestic chores and helping her son to lay laminated floors in the houses where he is contracted.

María has spent two years working with the community bank, which has allowed her to buy her animals to help her husband with living costs. She says that she will use the loan that FUNDACIÓN ESPOIR (Foundation of Hope) grants her to buy more chickens and guinea pigs which grow rapidly, as well as food and vitamins.

María's dream is to see her children get ahead by the example that she gives them.
