Canal De Benedicion 4&5 Group

Solenny is the coordinator of her group, the Canal de Bendicion (Channel of Blessing). Her story is representative of both the members of her group and Esperanza's Dominican Republic and Haitian clients more generally. Her group is based the rural areas surrounding La Romana, an area where many Haitian immigrants labor in an economy based around the sugarcane harvest, and where electricity and running water (none of which is potable) are unreliable at best. Here she makes her home alone.

She is excited about requesting her third loan and expanding her business. She has repaid these loans without problems and her loan size has grown along with her business. She plans to use this loan to purchase more pants and sheets to sell in her community. By buying in bulk she can negotiate a better price and use those profits to further invest in her business. In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee.
