Sabougnouman Group

The Sabougnouman group is made up of eight women (4 are widows and 4 are married). They live in large traditional families and they average 61 years of age and 4 children. They live in the Djaka (Kirango) district of Markala (the 4th administrative region of Mali: Segou). They know each other through family, marriage, and through neighbours. They carry out the same business to generate revenues, all surrounding fish and in all forms.

The group was organized through a fish processing cooperative started out by Anpe (National Employment Angecy). They have all received training on various hygiene techniques provided by BIT (International Work Bureau). They are have two modern ovens and dryers to their disposal.

After having successfully repaid 4 past loans, the group is requesting their 5th loan which is to be used to purchase 80 baskets of fish and 100 blocks of ice. They purchase fresh fish along the Niger River, sort them, and keep a good portion of them to be dried.
The fresh fish is sold at Segou (in the Chateau market), Bamako, Koutiala, and Sikasso. The dried fish is mostly sold in Dougabougou, Siribala, Niono, Shango and Segou, though they keep a portion to sell in the fall when they can earn more money. Smoked fish is mostly sold in Segou. Sales are generally completed in cash and credit to a clientele made up of men and women.

They hope in producing a monthly revenue of 80 FCFA which will help increase the volume of their sales, and to satisfy the needs of their family (including clothing, soaps, and petroleum). They will also be able to participate in social events (baptisms, weddings, circumcisions, and funerals).

They dream of buying a residential home for themselves.

Le groupe Sabougnouman est constitué de huit femmes (4 veuves et 4 mariées) vivant dans des grandes familles traditionnelles avec en moyenne 61 ans, 4 enfants et habitant le quartier Djaka (Kirango) de Markala (4ème Région administrative du Mali : Ségou).
Elles se sont connues à travers des liens de parenté, de mariage, de voisinage et font presque la même activité génératrice de revenus qui tourne autour du poisson sous toutes ses formes.
Ce groupe est également organisé en coopérative de transformatrices de poissons initiée par l’ANPE (Agence Nationale pour L’Emploi). Elles ont reçu des formations portant sur les différentes méthodes de transformation et de conservation dans les mesures d’hygiène retenues par le BIT (Bureau International du Travail). Elles ont bénéficié de deux fours modernes et des séchoirs.
Après 4 prêts solidaires tous bien remboursés, ce groupe est à son 5ème prêt qu’il compte utiliser pour acheter, 80 paniers de poisson et 100 barres de glace. Elles s’approvisionnent en poissons frais sur place au bord du fleuve Niger, elles les trient d’abord, une bonne partie de ce poisson est séchée. Le poisson frais se vend sur place, à Ségou ville (marché château), à Bamako, Koutiala et Sikasso. Le poisson séché est surtout vendu à Dougabougou, Siribala, Niono, Shango et à Ségou et une partie est conservée jusqu’à la décrue où elles gagnent plus d’argent. Le poisson fumé est essentiellement vendu à Ségou. Les ventes se font généralement au comptant et à crédit à une clientèle composée de femmes et d’hommes.
Elles comptent réaliser un bénéfice moyen mensuel de 80.000 FCFA qui servira à augmenter le volume de leurs activités, à satisfaire les petits besoins familiaux (habillements, savon, pétrole) et à participer aux évènements sociaux (baptême, mariage, circoncision et décès).
Elles ont pour ambition une maison à usage d’habitation.
