Benkadi is an association of eight women (4 widowed and 4 married) who live in large traditional families.  The women average 58 years of age and 5 children each. And they live in the Djaka district (Kirango) of Markala (4th administrative region of Mali: Ségou).  They know one another through ties of kinship, marriage, and community.  Their income-generating work involves the buying and selling of fish and the processing of it.

Currently, the women are organized into a cooperative of fish processors initiated by A.N.P.E. (a national jobs agency).  They've received training on the different methods for processing and preserving fish, insofar as hygienic standards per the BIT (international bureau of work).  The women were then the recipients of two modern ovens and some dryers.

After four solidarity loans with Soro Yiriwaso, all repaid, the women are now on their fifth group loan  This loan will enable them to purchase 80 baskets of fish and 200 bars of ice.

Supplies of fresh fish are gotten locally on the banks of the Niger River.  The fish are sorted, and much of it is dried or smoked.  The fresh fish is sold locally in Segou City (Château Market), Bamako, Koutiala, and Sikasso.  The dried fish is most of all sold in Dougabougou, Siribala, Niono, Shango, and Segou.  A portion is kept until the waters recede, when the women earn more money.  The smoked fish is sold essentially in Segou.  Sales are made generally in cash at the retail level and on credit.  The customers are composed of women and men.

The group members hope to realize an average monthly profit of 81,300 francs CFA that will be used to increase their business volume, to satisfy sundry family needs (clothing, soap, fuel), and to assist with social events (baptisms, marriages, and funerals).

Their ambition is to have a house in which to live.
