The five members of the Kotognogontala group are all married women who are on average 32 years old with 3 children, and live mainly in monogamous households in Hamdallaye, one of the districts in the town of Sikasso, 3rd administrative region of the Republic of Mali. This group of women are engaged in buying and selling food condiments, fruits and vegetables, firewood, and rice, and in preparing meals for sale. In order to satisfy the needs of their clientele, they decided to join the loan program of the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso. They are on their fourth collaboration with the institution, and all three of their previous loans were repaid properly.
With their new loan, they intend to buy one 100-kg bag of rice, 4 packets of food condiments, 2 van-loads of firewood, one 100-kg bag of peanuts (to make peanut paste for meal preparation), and 10 baskets of fruit. They obtain their supplies at the grand market in the town of Sikasso and in the neighbouring villages. They sell their goods at home, at stands in the markets, and door-to-door in various districts. They sell in cash and often on credit to a clientele composed of men and women.
They foresee realizing an average monthly profit of 18,500 FCFA each, of which one portion will be used as savings and to provide for their families, and the rest invested in their businesses.
