Manuela Álvarez Sánchez, 66, is a petite woman who makes and sells tamales in her town of San Felipe. She works hard to support herself and her grown son, who is legally blind. Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, she rises early to make tamales, which she sells on the street and to order. She has to buy the corn for the tamales and the firewood to cook with. She can make and sell about 150 tamales on a Saturday, which is her biggest day. After paying for her supplies, she can net about 150 Guatemalan Quetzals, which is about US$20.

Everyone in town knows of her business, and she sometimes gets special orders for celebrations and parties. She and her son also make plastic flowers for funerals and especially for All Saints' Day in November. They spend months making the flowers that will be required for that celebration.

Manuela started her business eight years ago when her husband died and she needed to find a way to support herself and her son. His vision has been a constant struggle – a few years ago he got an operation in Guatemala City and came home with thick glasses, but now they are too scratched and there is no money for replacements. Manuela's own health is not perfect – she's a diabetic and so has the perpetual health challenges of the elderly diabetic, but there's not much money left over for doctors or medicines, so she makes do as best she can.

To date Manuela has taken out and repaid five loans. Eventually she hopes to be able to buy in bulk and save money on her corn and firewood.

Update on Manuela

Entrepreneur: Manuela Álvarez Sánchez
Location: San Felipe Retalhuleu, Guatemala

Manuela currently works hard in developing both of her businesses: making and selling tamales and making plastic flowers, primarily for All Saints Day. She used her loan to purchase corn and firewood needed for making tamales and also to purchase a large inventory of the supplies needed to make the flowers. Manuela reports that the tamale business has been going well and sales have been steady. She and her son have also been making a lot of flowers, although they will not see the added income from these efforts until October and November. Nevertheless, loan repayment has been going well, with all payments made on-time and in full.

Manuela is very grateful for her loan, without which she says she would not be able to purchase the supplies she needs to keep her businesses going. She says that having access to credit has helped improve her overall quality of life, as she is now able to dress and eat a little better. She enjoys working with her communal bank, Barrio la Llovisna, because the group is very united and happy, and that everyone gets along very well.

Manuela’s biggest concern right now is for her son, who is legally blind and whose vision continues to worsen. She says that he is very smart and would love to study more, but cannot see well enough to read. Nevertheless, he is able to help her in both of her businesses, and she is happy to work with him and have the increased productivity.

Manuela says that, overall, she is very content because she has been able to prosper thanks to the help of Friendship Bridge.
