Sorbeh Group

Here are Gbassay Conteh, Posseh Bangura and Kadiatu Kamara. They call their group "Sorbeh," a Temne word, meaning “hard work.” They are small-scale businesswomen based in Makeni, a city in northern Sierra Leone. This is the first loan that these entrepreneurs are borrowing from SMT/Kiva. With this loan, they will be able to expand their businesses, make more profits, and improve their standards of living.

Gbassay Conteh (on the right in the photograph) is the leader of this group. Gbassay was born in Port Loko, in Northern Sierra Leone. She is now twenty-nine years old. She is married to a driver and they have one child who is in class six. Gbassay Conteh sells palm-oil (the most popular cooking oil in Sierra Leone) and “gara lapper” (locally-dyed clothes, sometimes with fabricated designs). She has five years of experience in this trade.




About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee.
