Martine Claco was born in 1961 in Cotonou, the economic capital of Benin. Martine has lived for about 48 years in the Cadjehoun area of Cotonou. Martine is married to Firmin Assogba, a mason, and she has seven children, six of whom are in her care. All of Martine's children are in school. Martine and Firmin provide for the family together. Not having gone to school, Martine began in business very early on. In fact, for thirty years, Martine has been selling sauce ingredients (fresh tomatoes, okra, spices, onions) and also charcoal and akassa (a food made of corn starch) in her area. Martine obtains her supplies at Dantokpa, the international market in Benin, and in Bohicon in Benin. Martine has already had two loans through ALIDÉ (one of Kiva's field partners), which she repaid properly. To increase her working capital in order to better satisfy her customers and assure her children's future, Martine is seeking a third loan through ALIDÉ.
