Flavia is the coordinator of her group Provenir Femenino. Her story is representative of her group and of Esperanza's Haitian and Dominican (many of whom recently emigrated from Haiti to the DR) clients more generally. Her group is based in the Samana peninsula in an area where there is little access to running water (none of which is potable) and the electrical grid is very unreliable. There she makes her home with her five children in a home that, while providing the necessities, is very far from the commercial center of Samana.

This is Flavia's seventh loan with Esperanza and she has shown herself to be a reliable associate, repaying all six previous loans without incident. She is taking this new loan to purchase more gasoline to sell to her neighbors and wells as coconuts which she processes to make coconut oil. She believes that the profits from this business will improve her life and the lives of her children by allowing her to take a course in English and photography so that she can change jobs. She says that working with the coconutsis very hard work and she would prefer to work in Samana City and eventually save enough money to move there. She thanks you all for your support.
