Rayo De Luz 1, 2 And 3 Group

Maria is the group coordinator for Banco de Esperanza (Bank of Hope) Rayo de Luz (Ray of Light). Her story is representative of the others in her group and also more generally of Esperanza's Haitian and Dominican clients. Maria lives in Hato Mayor, a rural area in the Dominican Republic. Her house has unreliable access to non-potable running water and electricity. She lives in a house with her husband and 10-year-old son.

Maria operates a bakery that sells sweets called Dulces de Maria. She runs her business out of her home and sells sweets, bread and other food items like fruit juice. This will be her fourth loan with Esperanza after successfully paying back her previous three loans. She plans to use this loan to purchase food items to sell and ingredients so she can make items to sell. She specifically needs flour, rice, sugar, oil, eggs and butter.

Maria wants to continue to improve her living conditions by working hard and advancing her family. Her dream is to one day be able to afford her own pastry store so she doesn't have to operate her business from her home.



About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee.
