Mainor Vargas Guillén, 43, lives in his own house with his wife and four children. They live in the El Sauce community in Santa Teresita de Turrialba. It is a small, rural community with two thousand inhabitants. The population works in milk production and growing coffee. The landscape is irregular and much of the land is kept as humid rain forest. The community has very picturesque scenery that combines the tropical forest with two beautiful lakes, coffee plantations, and dairies. El Sauce is located approximately one and a half hour by bus from Turrialbe, which is the nearest commercial center. Nevertheless, several times a year the road becomes impassable because of the rainfall in the area. This is, without doubt, one of the main challenges for the community. When there was not much work, many people chose to leave to look for work in Turrialba or in banana farms located on the Atlantic in Costa Rica. Presently, the price of coffee and milk has improved; hence the neighbors are looking to invest in projects in their own region.

Two years ago a the Asociación de Productos de Leche (Association of Milk Products) of El Sauce set up a cheese making plant in the community. Therefore, for the past two years Mainor has been specializing in milk production that he then sells to this plant.

Mainor inherited the dairy from his family; his parents developed the dairy for many years. Mainor currently has a small installation where he milks. But, due to the fact that his business is growing, the space has become insufficient. Mainor wants to get a loan for 500,000 (five hundred thousand colones) to buy materials to build a larger place. That way he could better accommodate the cows and reduce the milking time.

Mainor is a client of the Asociación de Productores de El Sauce, a local organization that is a member of the EDESA financial institution. Thanks to his connection to this organization he has received 12 loans. He has repaid them satisfactorily, and they have helped him expand his business of producing milk and milk products.
