Luz Y Esperanza 4 & 5 Group

Miguelina is the coordinator of her group. Her story is representative both of the members of her group as well as Esperanza's Haitian and Dominican (many of whom recently emigrated from Haiti to the DR) clients more generally. Her group is based in Santiago, the second largest town in the DR, which is a region known for agricultural production and where running water (none of which is potable) and electricity are unreliable at best. Here she makes her home in a simple structure of concrete walls, a tin roof and a dirt floor with her husband and two children.

Miguelina has just completed her first loan cycle with Esperanza and she is excited to take out her second loan. With this loan she plans to further invest in her business selling candles in her neighborhood. She has identified a market for candles in her neighborhood as a result of the frequent, extended blackouts common in her area. She believes that this business will provide a steady income and improve her quality of life and the lives of her children. She thanks you all for your support.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee.
