She lives in the community of Las Jaguas, about 10 minutes from the city of Rocafuerte. This place is known for being a tourist center where every weekend many people arrive to enjoy themselves with their families and savor the best traditional foods.

Genoveva is certified in basic education, and her husband is an industrial engineer. Together they run a small business where they manufacture plantain chips. They have been in this business for 4 years and have done so well that their brand is recognized throughout Manabí province.

Responsibilities are shared. Her husband is in charge of distribution to established customers in different districts while Genoveva is in charge of making the plantain chips with the help of two young men who are assigned to peel the bananas. It is hard work, but they are happy with all their success.

With the loan that the ESPOIR Foundation is giving her she is going to manufacture packaging with the trademark of their product (Chapuchifles) for their next deliveries.

Business and Family Are Doing Well!

Entrepreneur: Genoveva Bibiana Garcia Ugalde
Location: Portoviejo, Ecuador

Genoveva and her family are doing quite well in growing their plantain chip (chifle) business. She invested the loan to buy supplies to make the chips and sell them in town. She has never missed a payment and feels very confident versus many of her neighbors and fellow countrymen. Unfortunately, the entire country of Ecuador is going through a major energy crisis at the moment due to a lack of rainfall near a major dam that provides electricity for much of the country, but is only operating at half its normal level. Energy is being rationed per town zone with 3-5 hours without electricity at a time, and on Sundays no electricity at all during daylight hours. Genoveva really appreciates the educational classes that Fundacion Espoir offers since the lessons taught her how to invest her loan properly and manage her finances.
