Contact Group

Contact Group is a group of five borrowers led by Batu Gbanjah. She is 45 years old and the single mother of seven children aged 8 to 22 years old with educational levels of 4th through 12th grade. Batu is illiterate due to poverty. She and her family live in Banjour, a newly-built community for poor people who can't afford to buy town lots. It is situated in Virginia, north of Monrovia, the capital of Liberia.

Batu’s business is selling food ingredients. She buys food ingredients wholesale like salt, seasoning, bouillon cubes, onions, tomato paste, etc., and sells retail to the residents of Banjour. She has been running this business for three years and hopes to get into a used car business and become one of the biggest businesswomen in Liberia.

Everyone at Batu's business place sells the same goods and that makes for competition. To counter this, she parcels her goods in bigger quantities and differently from other vendors and she also gives her customers a good approach in order to get more customers.

Batu needs this loan in order to purchase new goods to improve her business. She dreams of giving her children a better education to prepare them for the future.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee.
