Remedios Cabrera, 55, is of the same age as her husband, Alfredo Cabrera. They have 3 children: Mary Jane and Mary Grace are twins (both are 33 years old), and the youngest is Mariette (28 years old). Her husband used to work as a fisherman earlier until they decided to run a fishing business. They started the business with small fish cage with few fingerlings. Later, the number of fingerlings increased. Their business recently completed 8 years mainly because of their perseverance for improving their business.

One thing that Remedios wanted is capital to expand her business. So she joined Kiva field partner Ahon sa Hirap Inc. (ASHI) and used the loan for the improvement of her business. She plans to use her loan to buy fishnet, bamboo and accessories for the fishnet and also to pay the laborer.

Remedios dreams of having a successful business someday, so that her family will be secured for a better future. She is striving hard today with the help of her husband and her three children to make this dream possible.

Loan Utilization Check (LUC) Report

Entrepreneur: Remedios Cabrera
Location: Binangonan, Rizal, Philippines

After the entrance of Typhoon Ondoy to the area of the Philippines which caused a big damage to a hundred thousand people, Kiva field partner Ahon sa Hirap Inc. (ASHI) visited all their member living in the place where ravaged by Typhoon Ondoy. It is the place like Rizal and Laguna. Most of the member living there is really affected by what happen. Some of them lost their houses because of flood, lost their means of living, and worst lost one or more member of their family. If you see by your own eyes the situation there of the people you could tell to yourself at that time that I’m a lucky one and you really feel sorry for them, you might think that if there’s anything you can do just to help them. ASHI lend a helping hand for them in a little way like giving food which is what they really needed by now.

Remedios Cabrera family is one of the many families in the island village of Buhangin in Binangonan Rizal who suffered because of typhoon Ondoy. Their lost their means of living which is their fishing business. According to Remedios their fish cage is broke by the big water and waves in the sea and their fishing gear is lost because of the flood all over their village. The sad part on it is she used the the entire loan that she received in ASHI a few weeks ago in expanding her fish cage with the vision of earning more profit came from that business and now the business is gone. All the money and especially effort that they exerted in expanding the business are all wasted. And Remedios honestly accepted that she don’t know what to do to start again. So she is always praying to God for a more strength to overcome to what happen.

ASHI management and staff talk about what they can do to help all affected Nanay (this is how they call all their member. Nanay means Mother). Those are now suffering after experiencing that bad incident. One solution that they decided is the two weeks suspension for the repayment of every member, this take place the week after the tragedy cause by Typhoon Ondoy. One thing that ASHI will talk about is the recovery loan (RECOVERY LOAN PROGRAM which designed specific for victims of calamity where houses and projects were completely and partially devastated) that will give to the member in order for them to rebuild their lost means of living. This is for discussion; if the member really needs it and it will really help them ASHI will not think twice to give them this kind of loan.
