Mujeres De Fe Group

Teofila is the coordinator of her group, Mujeres de Fe (Women of Faith). Her story is representative of both her group members and Esperanza's Haitian and Dominican (many of whom recently emigrated to the DR from Haiti) clients. Her group is based in the community of Las Flores in the coastal city of Puerto Plata, where running water (which is not potable) and electricity are unreliable at best. She rents a simple structure of concrete walls and a tin roof where she lives with her husband. She is six months pregnant.

Teofila has become a successful Esperanza associate and has already successfully repaid three loans. With this loan she intends to purchase precious stones, Larimar (a locally mined precious stone) coconuts, shells, lanyards and metal wiring to use in her artisan work. She plans to market her goods both in her native City of Puerto Plata, but also hopes to market them in other islands in the Caribbean by sending them to her father who works in the Turks and Caicos. About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee.
