Virgen del Carmen

This group is comprised of ten people and was founded in Matucana-Provincia Huarochirí, which is on the Km 75 central highway. This place is characterized by its tourist attractions and the typical dishes of the Peruvian mountain ranges.

Isabel Velasquez Antezano, like the others who participate in the Virgen de Carmen Communal Bank, has looked for an independent way to progress in a small business. With time, they have been implementing more businesses.

Isabel has been selling flowers near the Plaza de Armas for over 26 years. She gets up early at 4:00 a.m. to buy the merchandise in the Lima flower market. She does this weekly. In the beginning she sold roses, gladiolas, and pompoms, which are the flowers in the most demand by the public. With the loans she received, she invested more in her business, as can be seen in the photograph. She bought a variety of different kinds of flowers, flowerpots decorated with drawings of animals, and fertilized soil. She used the earnings from these sales to cover the necessary expenses for taking care of her children and to buy merchandise.

Francisca Huanca Alcacondori, the president, sells food from Monday through Friday at a dining room in the town. Also, she makes typical dishes on the week ends to meet the demand from the tourists visiting the district. She rents out her small farm seasonally. This is generally known as shared planting because the owner provides the farm, and the renter provides the investment to obtain the product. In her free time she visits her friends’ houses in order to sell them beauty products. These additional incomes allow her to help her husband pay for post high school education in the capital (Lima) for their two children. It also pays for their room. She will use the recent loan to buy plates, cups, and supplies to sell chicken soup on the week ends.
