Mirlanda is the coordinator of her bank of hope: Luz y Progreso (Light and Progress). Her story is representative of both the members of her group and Eseperanza's Dominican and Haitian (many of whom recently emigrated to the DR from Haiti) clients. Her group is based in the Samana peninsula in the east of the Dominican Republic, where running water (none of which is potable) and electricity are unavailable. She and her children call "home" a simple structure of wooden walls with a tin roof.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee. Under this arrangement, each member of the group supports one another and is responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members if someone is delinquent or defaults. Learn more
Mirlanda first came to Esperanza with the goal of starting a business and she is now on her third loan after having succesfully repaid the first two. She will use this third loan to reinvesting in her business by purchasing a display case as well as additional accessories to sell: necklaces, gold chains and earrings.
She plans to use the increased profits to purchasing various things for her family, including: animals to be raised for food and tools for her children's educatoin - books, backpacks and a computer. Her long-term goal is to finish repairing and improving her home and to invest in a new location for her business that will attract more customers.
