Teresita runs a small market stall selling clothes, food and other items. She has operated her store for over eight years and her loans have allowed her to increase her business by 80%. She plans to use this loan to buy a box of used clothes and food items to sell. She has successfully repaid two loans and this will be her third loan with Esperanza. Teresita is single and has three grown children. She wants to continue to increase her business and add more products to her store.
Teresita is the group coordinator of the Banco de Esperanza (Bank of Hope) Mujeres Activas (Active Women). Her story is representative of both her group and of Esperanza's Dominican and Haitian clients (many of whom have recently immigrated to the DR). The group is based in Puerto Plata in a community that has unreliable access to running water and electricity and lacks trash service.
